On september 1, 2015 I (Rutger Vlek, born 1982) founded River Creative Technology, while looking for a way to share my passion for electronic musical instruments, design and creativity more actively. I have a background in artificial intelligence (MSc.) and completed a PhD on the topic of Brain-Computer Interfacing (and on how the brain processes music). Music has always been important to me, from a very young age. Starting with classical cello lessons, and a passion for mechanical musical instruments, for which I have arranged and produced various musical pieces. As a university student I was drawn towards electronic musical instruments, composition and live performance with bands. I was involved in successfully producing and releasing two CDs with Orpheo, touring Europe with Autumn, and I’m currently writing new material for Day Six. Combining my technical and musical interests, I started repairing vintage synthesizers and designing new instruments. In 2005 in finished my first synth child: the semi-modular analog Ocean synthesizer, coaxing the following words from Michael Gallant’s pen in a Keyboard Magazine review: “… the Ocean is one beautiful monster of a keyboard”. Later I collaborated with Thorsten Klose of the popular MidiBox platform on the implementation of the first cross-platform MIDI editor & librarian for the MidiBox SIDv2 synthesizer. Meanwhile I built my own 8-voice version of this synth too, heavily modified with 8 transistor ladder filters.
